  • ASPInsider Summit is coming up

I’m really excited.  Next week, I am going to Redmond/Seattle, WA for the ASPInsider Summit.  Its Tuesday(Dec. 5th), Wednesday(Dec. 6th), and Thursday(Dec. 7th).  I love going to these types of events at Microsoft.  I get to see all the other ASPInsiders, yes even you Plip, like Phil Winstanley, Dave Sussman, David Penton, Scott Cate, Steve Smith, the Telligent Guys, Steve Orr, and everyone else.  It is great to meet with people that do SO much out in the industry.  I learn so much just being around them.

The only problem is that I decided to travel through Dallas, TX on my way to Seattle.  I figured that this would be a better route than to go through Chicago due to ice and snow.  While the weather is forecast to be fine on Sunday when I travel, the weather in Dallas today is snow.  I figured that there would be snow in Chicago in December, but Dallas?!?  WTF is going on there.

PS.  I hate naming people because someone will be “hurt” because they didn’t get named.  I honestly am excited about seeing everyone!

  • Basketball season starts Saturday

Last night, we had the coach's dinner.  I can't say enough about what a great job that Mike, Jeremy, and Lynn do for the youth sports at Cedar Springs Church.  They have soccer, basketball, and baseball/softball.  I am amazed at how their program has grown over the several years that I have been involved.  I think that there are approximately 90 children in the fourth-fifth grade league.  Last year, there were approximately 60 children.

On Saturday, we have our first basketball practice.  I am so excited.  Most of the kids from on the team are from Bradley's grade at school (7 children in the fourth grade).  We have two children from the fifth grade (Johnny and Kirsten).  Based on the ages of the children, I predict a long season.  I just want to win 1 game.

  • Mike Shula was fired

It was just last week when I mentioned that Mike Shula might be in touble at Alabama.  Right here at: http://morewally.com/cs/blogs/wallym/archive/2006/11/24/501.aspx
This morning, Mike Shula was fired at Alabama.  See, you should read my blog.

I still think that there is something else wrong at Alabama, but I don't know what it is.
  • What's the best type of TSql/CLR Integration in Sql Server 2005

One of the questions that came up when I was in South Bend is what is the best way to use CLR Objects?  Assuming that your solution needs a CLR Object, should you use a Dataset, Generic List (what I tend to show), or a TSQL/CLR integrated solution.  Honestly, I don't have an answer to that question, right now.  However, I should have something in a couple of days.  I have just completed writing the three scenarios that I have.  I am going to do some testing and I will be posting my findings after I complete my testing.

Hint: I am seeing a difference in the speed depending on how I structure things.

  • Sorry Reggie, but hand someone else the Ball

I watched another Georgia Tech - Georgia game on Saturday in which Georgia Tech outplayed Georgia and lost.  This is the third year in a row that this has happened.

In 2004, The Tech Defense dominated the final three quarters only to watch Reggie Ball throw the ball away on fourth down thinking it was third down.

In 2005, I watched an inept Tech offense finally get something together late in the game, drive to the shadow of the Georgia goal line only to turn the ball over when Reggie Ball threw an interception at the goal line.

Now, in 2006, I watched Reggie Ball turn the football  over 3 times in the second half in a 15-12 loss.  This was after Reggie had played horribly in the first half of the game.  At the half, as John and I talked, I said that Reggie should sit and that Taylor Bennett should play inthe second half.  Yes, that's right Tech's backup quarterback.  Why?  A couple of reasons why:

    • Reggie is just flat out too emotional.  Emotion is good.  I respect emotion.  I love it.  However, Reggie's emotion tends to get the better of him during the game.
    • Reggie was already having a horrible day.  Could Bennett have been any worse?
    • Reggie doesn't play to his strengths, he plays to his weaknesses.  His bigggest weakness is that he is fairly small.  You can't take onl bigger players when you are small.
    • When he scrambles, he goes backwards in an attempt to get away from the defeners, yet he always gets sacked.  The result is a large number of negative plays.

For the first two years, I thought that Reggie would grow up and be a really good player.  After all, his first two years, he was 7-5 both years.  I felt sorry for him in his third year when he got viral meningitis.  He had played well upto that point, but after that, he just didn't have what it took and Georgia Tech folded after that.  This year, he started off fairly well, but after watching the stats the last few games, he has really reverted to his old self.  I've seen the turnovers go up and the number of completions go down.  The Georgia game was the same as it ever was.  He played poorly in the first half and then tried to force the issue several times in the second half resulting in turnovers.

Here is the bottom line for the ACC Championship Game.  Do you go with Reggie Ball or Taylor Bennett?  Do you go with the devil you know or the devil that you don't know?  If it was up to me, I've seen enough of the devil I know, I would roll the dice and go with the devil I don't know.  It can't be any worse that what we have already seen..............

  • Jim Minatel on Plagarism

Jim Minatel of Wiley has a good post on plagarism.  It is at http://wroxblog.typepad.com/minatel/2006/11/an_authors_view.html.  His post is built on Nicholas Zacharias' post at http://www.nczonline.net/archive/2006/10/385.  The bottom line is that it is important to not read someone else's work when you are working on the same subject.  I remember a couple of years ago, I was talking to Bob Beachemin.  We were talking about Sql Server CLR Objects.  he offered to send me a copy of his book on Sql Server Yukon beta2.  While I have always appreciated it, I told him at the time it was probably not a good idea because I was working on our ADO.NET book and specifically the part on Sql Server CLR Objects.

So, the bottom line is that I agree with Jim 100% on his statements.
  • The College Football Coaching Carousel has started

Miami University fired Larry Coker today.  I predicted this about 2 months ago.  He may be a nice guy, but the bottom line in college football is winning.  Second thing is to not embarras the school.  Third is do your players graduate.  If you don't do the first two, the third doesn't matter.  Coach Coker's record was headed in the wrong direction.  These are 12-0, 11-1, 11-2, 9-3, 9-3, and 6-6.  That's the wrong direction.  In addition, Miami has had a major on field fight, embarrassed the team in Louisville when they stomped on the Cardinal logo and then lost 31-7.  The worst problem is the defensive lineman that was murdered outside the  his apartment.  Too much has gone wrong this year.
Florida State and Bobby Bowden.  Before Bobby Bowden, FSU was nothing.  Now people are complaining that the game has left him behind.  Well, the worst thing that FSU could do is to get rid of Bobby Bowden.  He is FSU.
Michigan and Lloyd Carr.  I think that Lloyd Carr is eventually going to be in trouble unless he can start to beat Ohio State and Jim Tressel.  Probably not this year because he is going to get another shot at them, but this might catch up to him eventually.
Alabama and Mike Shula.  Shula stepped into a bad situation.  He's done ok, but it doing ok doesn't cut it at Alabama.  Yes Shula is an Alabama alumni and yes he was a good player.  yes, he has gotten by and had some winning records.  Winning records don't cut it at Alabama.  At Alabama, you are suppossed to play for national championships and they haven't be playing for them recently.  There must be something else wrong at Alabama.  Dennis Francionne left Alabama to go to Texas A&M.  That's not the way things are suppossed to go.  Its suppossed to go the other way, ala Bear Bryant.
Penn State and Joe Paterno.  Penn State was nothing without Joe Paterno, so it doesn't make any sense to get rid of him.  After all, they were 11-1 last year and are 8-4 this year.
  • College Football - Where the 1 loss teams sit on November 24, 2006

The great question right now in college football is, "Who will play against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl?"  Let's look at the top contenders assuming that they all win out:
    • Michigan 11-1.  They look to to be the best of the 1 loss teams.  Their one loss was to Ohio State by 3 points at Ohio State (12-0).  They whipped Notre Dame by 26 points at Notre Dame.
    • University of Southern California 9-1.  Their one loss would be from Oregon State (7-4) on the road by 2 points.  They will have beaten California, Notre Dame, Arkansas (this looks bigger every week), and Nebraska.
    • University of Florida 10-1.  Their one loss is at Auburn (10-2) by  3 (or10 points).  They will have won the SEC champtionship.
    • University of Arkansas 10-1.  Their one loss was to the University of Southern California, but it was by about 30 points and at home. Update:Scratch Arkansas after a  31-26 loss toe LSU.
    • Notre Dame 10-1.  Their one loss was to Michigan but it was at home and by 26 points.
    • Louisville, West Virginia, and Rutgers.  Big East, need I say more.
Since the BCS is about puting 1 vs. 2, there is only one conclusion I can come to.  Michigan is #2.  Their one loss is the best of the #1 team.  Will it happen?  Who knows.
  • BCS - Its better than it used to be

What's all this complaining about the Bowl Championship Series (BCS)?!?  Its like people don't remember what the bowl system was like before the BCS.  Pre-1998, conference champions were locked into exclusive deals to play in specific games.  The SEC champion played in the Sugar Bowl.  The Big 8 (then Big 12) champion played in the Orange Bowl.  The Sothwestern Conference champion played in the Cotton Bowl.  The Big 10 and Pac 10 champions played in the Rose Bowl.  as a result, it took an act of god to get a matchup of 1 vs. 2.  Is the BCS perfect, no, but its better than it was before.

That was a pretty good game on Saturday.  It was so good, I want a rematch.
  • It is now that week, Hate Georgia (UGA) NOW!

With Georgia Tech's 49-21 victory over Duke, its now Georgia Week.  Beat the rush, Hate Georgia Now!

This year, the game will be in Athens.  Tech's last football victory over UGA was in Athen's in 2000.  George Godsey ran 27 yards for the game's first score on an option play.  The funny part of it was that Godsey was not very fleet of foot so no one covered him as he ran the option.  This was Jim Donnan's last game as the coach of Georgia.  He was officially fired on the Monday morning, but word has it that the axe started to fall at halftime as GT opened up a 27-3 lead.  Since that game, Mark Richt, the new head coach at Georgia, has owned Georgia Tech by going 5-0 against the Jackets.  Hopefully, Reggie Ball, Calvin Johnson, and Tashard Choice can lead Tech to victory this year.
