  • Getting the IIS7 Managed Module Starter Kit to work

I ran into a problem with the IIS7 Managed Module Starter Kit.  I would load Visual Studio .NET 2005 and I couldn't find the option to create the project anywhere.  Steve Schofield told me that all you need to to do is to copy the IIS7 Managed Module Starter Kit file from the Project Templates directory to the Item Template directory and it would show up.  Sure enough, that solved the problem.
  • Outlook 2007 is unusable

I would think that Outlook 2007 Beta 2 would connect to an IMAP server fairly easily.  After all, IMAP is a standard that has been around for a while.  Outlook 2003 connects to IMAP pretty easily.  Well, Outlook 2007 Beta 2 stinks in this scenario.  It will connect to my Exchange Server through IMAP, but then Outlook 2007 dies.  O2k7 seems to start a connection, it updates the number of emails like is running over a 56kbps modem connection (its connected by 10 mbps and physically sitting right next to the mail server), and then it starts soaking up all available CPU and memory on the client system.

Now, that's not the only problem that O2k7 has.  When I start it up or switch over to it, it has a (Not Responding) message in the titlebar for me.  That really gives me confidence.  At this point in time, I am finding O2k7 to be completely unusable.  Too bad, I think the UI for Office 2k7 looks really cool.  I'm hoping I have better luck with Word.

I've been running WinMail with no problems, but this O2k7 stinks.  Yeah, I realize its still beta, but the product doesn't even work for me.

  • The memories of the Windows 95 beta

I was just reading Scoble's thoughts on getting Windows Activated.  Like him, I remember downloading and installing Windows 95 every weekend back during its beta.  I had a 14.4 kbps connection to my isp and I downloaded it every friday night.  Each Friday night, a new build of Windows 95 was released to the private beta users.  I would start the download, go eat dinner with my fiance, wake up the next morning and have all 36 megs of content.  Funny how I have a cable modem now and it still takes all night to get the content, what with the fighting with other people for bandwidth.

  • Really good coaches

After being the basketball coach, I enjoy not being a coach during the other seasons.  In the leagues where we play, I have watched a husband and wife coaching team.  They are very good.  They know what they are doing.  They teach the kids the right things.  As a result, their teams win more than they lose.  I've talked to them several times and they are the nicest people to talk with.  I think of them the same way that Bum Philips, a former NFL coach, talked about Don Shula.  Bum said of Shula one time, "He can take his and beat yours and then take yours and beat his."
  • Outlook 2007?

I just installed Outlook 2007 along with Office 2007.  What is the deal with Outlook?  It seems to suck the processor dry of cycles.  Does it do full text search in this version?  Is it creating an index in the background?

  • Desktop Profile / Experience in 5384 build of Longhorn / Vista Server

It looks like there is Desktop Profile / Experience / Role that you can enable in Longhorn / Vista Server Build 5384 (beta2).  By enabling it, I got the Windows Mail application and a few other goodies.  My hope is that this is for us developers that use a server as our primary desktop environment.

On a side note, don't forget to enable the Windows Audio Service.

  • Windows Debugger Uninstall

I'm sure that most people are familiar with the Windows Debuggers at: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx

I was just told that uninstall them, all you have to do is delete the directory that they are installed in.  Nice.
  • World Cup Rules of behavior

I got this the other day.  While it talks about the rules for the World Cup, I think it applies to any especially important sporting event (NBA championship, College March Madness, American Football Bowls, Super Bowl, anything from Georgia Tech, and so on).

Extremely important advice and recommendations to be passed on to wives, girlfriends, fiancés, mothers, sisters, daughters, etc. (to all women in general).

These rules are to be communicated prior to the World Cup in June/July this year...

    LIST OF RULES

    1. From 9 June to 9 July 2006, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the World Cup, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.
    2. During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).
    3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don't mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without distracting me. If you decide to stand nude in front of the TV, make sure you put clothes on right after because if you catch a cold, I wont have time to take you to the doctor or look after you during the World Cup month.
    4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out of your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell from the second floor....it wont happen.
    5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on, and please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and 6am, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.
    6. Please, please, please!! if you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say "get over it, its only a game", or "don't worry, they'll win next time". If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than me and your so called "words of encouragement" will only lead to a break up or divorce.
    7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the halftime score is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying "one" game, hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to "spend time together".
    8. The replays of the goals are very important. I don't care if I have seen them or I haven't seen them, I want to see them again. Many times.
    9. Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because:
      a) I will not go,
      b) I will not go, and
      c) I will not go.
    10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.
    11. The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying "but you have already seen this... why don't you change the channel to something we can all watch??", the reply will be: "Refer to Rule #2 of this list".
    12. And finally, please save your expressions such as "Thank God the World Cup is only every 4 years". I am immune to these words, because after this comes the Champions League, Italian League, Spanish League, Premier League, etc etc.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Regards

  • Mavs over the Spurs

Ok, was the Dallas Mavericks over the San Antonio Spurs not a great series?  I hate to use the term "Instant Classic," but it does seem to look it.  Except for Game 2, all were awesome games.
  • Vista and stuff on MSDN

Windows Vista (Beta 2), Longhorn Server (Beta whatever), and Office 2007 (Beta 2) have all appeared on MSDN for subscribers.  I am madly downloading it at home.  It will take a while.  I should have it by Wednesday.
